ELDERS
Gwinnett Bible Chapel is governed by a team of elders. The elders have unique responsibilities that are vital to the overall health of the local church. Among these responsibilities are:
- Caring for the people of God – like a shepherd would care for sheep (1 Peter 5:2).
- Counseling, comforting and correcting the people of God. (1 Thessalonians. 5:14).
- Teaching sound doctrine and protecting the congregation from false teachers (Titus 1:9-11).
- Prayerfully making decisions consistent with God’s direction for the assembly.
- Leading by example with gentleness, humility, patience and compassion (I Peter 5:3).
- Casting a vision for individual spiritual growth and for ongoing ministry development.
While all of the elders must meet unique God-given requirements (outlined in 1 Timothy 3, Titus 1 and I Peter 5), it should be noted that they all have different personalities, abilities and spiritual gifts. Some may speak publicly while others may work more in the background. It should also be noted that there is equality among the elders – there is no senior or chief elder, and they are accountable to one another before God. In this way the elders are able to serve God’s people as one unit demonstrating God’s care and addressing God’s concerns.
