Session 2: The Race & the Crises of the Gospel (Mk.8:27-38)
1. Confrontation (encounter) with the person of Christ (Mk.8:27-29) – Christian life begins with a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. This is how we are enlisted in the race. The supreme question in Christianity is “Who is Jesus Christ?”
2. Confession of Christ (Mk.8:29). Christ demands us to confess Him as our Savior and Lord. This is how we begin to progress in our race (obedience and service).
3. Conflict (Mk.8:31-33) – Our obedience to Christ and our association with Him brings conflicts in life; conflicts with family, friends, world, our ambitions and plans for life, etc.
4. Cross (Mk.8:34) – Christian life is cross-centered. It is costly. The Lord calls us to follow Him as His disciples, taking up the cross. It refers to a denial of self-centered interests and ultimately the death of “self” in our life (“Not I, but Christ,” Gal.2:20)
5. Commitment (Mk.8:36-37) – The sure way to save the soul (the essence of life) is to lose it (entrust it to Jesus in His service).
Remember: We run the race as disciples of Christ, experiencing the Crises of the Gospel. This is authentic Christianity.
